Chapter 15: Whispers at the Edge

The chill mountain wind seeped through the cracks between the boulders, carrying the faint, insidious hum of the whisper-weave nodes Hale’s riders had planted along the ravine’s mouth. The vibration settled behind Sera’s eyes, a quiet buzz tangling with every thought she tried to form. Her chest burned with every inhale, a raw, scraping ache that had clung to her since childhood. She pressed a fist lightly against her sternum, fighting back the tickle threatening to ignite another coughing fit. The Soul-Weave linking her to Zephyr hummed thin and stretched, a fragile thread strung across miles of mountain and pine. She could feel his quiet focus, far away beneath the treetops, and that faint tether was her only anchor.

“Listen closely,” Sera murmured to the two cadets, her tone steady despite the weight crushing her lungs. “The spell cannot force us to believe its lies. It only amplifies fears we carry buried deep — doubts we never dared to speak aloud.”

The second cadet’s jaw tightened, knuckles white around the hilt of his blade. The whisper-magic curled around his thoughts once more, soft and venomous. *You will die here, and the academy will erase your name from the rider rolls. Sera dragged you into this trap for her own cause.* He squeezed his eyes shut for a heartbeat, shaking off the fog clouding his mind. “I can feel it. It digs into every quiet worry I’ve ever held. What if I never truly belonged among riders?”

High overhead, five enemy dragons circled slowly. They did not rush to strike. They let the weave wear the three of them down from the inside out. The lead rider’s voice slipped directly into their minds, no shout required, intimate and cold.

The ravine is lined with nodes. Step inside, and doubt will overwhelm you completely. There is no escape through that passage.

Sera’s gaze tracked the narrow ravine, its shadowed entrance tucked behind stacked slabs of grey rock. She knew the warning was not entirely a lie. If they charged blindly into the gorge, the concentrated whisper-weave would flood their minds, shattering their resolve before they reached the forest on the far side. Yet to remain trapped within the stone maze was also a death sentence. The riders would simply wait, until exhaustion and Sera’s failing lungs left them helpless, easy to capture.

“We will not run straight in,” Sera said, a quiet plan forming in her mind. “We strike the nearest node first. Break one anchor point, and the whole network weakens. The weave’s power depends on all its roots working as one.”

Far beneath the pine canopy, on the mountain’s opposite slope.

Zephyr’s golden wings slowed, hovering low between treetops. Shade settled beside him, the apprentice clinging tight to the shadow dragon’s scales, the leather pouch holding stone fragments pressed hard against his chest. A single patrolling dragon circled overhead, leather wings rustling. Its rider leaned forward, scanning the forest’s shadowed undergrowth for hidden movement.

“They see us,” the apprentice whispered, breath trembling against Shade’s cool scales.

*He is alone,* Kaelen’s thought rolled through Shade’s bond, calm yet edged with urgency. *One horn blast, and reinforcements will pour in. We cannot afford open combat. We must outthink him, not outmatch him.*

The patrol rider’s voice echoed down from above, sharp and clear. “Reveal yourselves! I know you carry the traitor’s evidence. Surrender now, and I will spare your lives.”

Zephyr shifted his weight, golden eyes fixed upward. *I can draw him away. I will surge up from the trees and lead his dragon off along the ridge. Shade, carry the witness forward; keep low, stick to the thickest undergrowth.*

*A risky gambit,* Kaelen replied. *But it is our only option. Do not engage. Only distract.*

Back in the stone maze.

Sera gestured for the cadets to follow, creeping silently from boulder to boulder toward the outermost whisper-node half-hidden in rock near the ravine’s mouth. The node was a gnarled black root, thrumming with faint violet light, pulsing steadily as it fed doubt into the mountain air.

The first cadet raised his sword to strike it, but a wave of psychic force washed over them the instant he stepped close.

You will fail. All your sacrifice is meaningless. Sera’s quest is nothing but a delusion.

Sera’s vision swam for a moment. A sharp cough burst from her throat, the metallic taste of copper flooding her mouth. She leaned against the rock, gasping shallow breaths, and forced herself to refocus. “Don’t fight the thought. Name it for what it is. It is magic, not truth. Hold fast to what you know is real.”

She channeled the faint golden light of her Soul-Weave, directing it toward the black root. The golden energy wrapped around the node, not with brute force, but steady, unshakable certainty. The violet glow flickered, sputtered, and the root cracked with a dry, splintering sound. The weave’s hum cut off abruptly.

A ripple of silence washed over the ravine. One node broken. The spell network wavered, whispers thinning for a heartbeat.

The enemy riders roared in anger overhead. “They broke a node! They are moving for the ravine!”

“Now!” Sera gasped. “We go, before they reinforce the weave!”

The three of them sprinted toward the ravine entrance. Remaining nodes still flooded the passage with faint whispers, but their power had diminished. Doubts nipped at the edges of their minds, yet they held fast, each clinging to a quiet personal truth as an anchor. I chose this. I know what I fight for.

Meanwhile in the forest.

Zephyr surged upward, bursting from the treeline in a flash of burnished gold scales. The patrolling dragon snapped its jaws, wheeling sharply to chase the golden beast. The rider’s full attention locked onto Zephyr completely, missing Shade and the apprentice slipping silently deeper through pine thickets, drawing nearer to the distant stone spire of the watchtower.

But the patrol rider raised his horn to his lips even mid-chase. A low, echoing note rolled across the mountain slopes. Reinforcements were coming.

Back inside the ravine.

Sera’s group ran deeper into the shadowed gorge. Remaining whisper-nodes pulsed, and the whispers swelled once again. The second cadet stumbled, his steps faltering. “What if reinforcements reach the tower first? What if we are already too late?”

Sera reached out, her hand closing around his arm as they ran. “That is the weave speaking. We keep moving.”

Yet high along the ridge, more dragon wings bloomed on the horizon. Hale’s backup had answered the horn. They closed in fast.

The two threads of their mission were both fraying.
